We had the missionaries over for dinner tonight, and my husband began telling them stories from his own mission. There were two in particular that I thought I would share with you.
The first one happened shortly after he arrived in Taiwan. One day, he was assigned to go work with a more experienced missionary. This was his first opportunity to actually get involved in the work in Taiwan. After knocking on some doors, they met a man who agreed to listen to what they had to say. The experienced missionary began teaching a lesson to the man. But as he talked, the missionary began to speak slower and slower. Then suddenly, the missionary stopped talking, his eyes closed and he fell asleep! At that precise moment, the man they were teaching leaned his head back, and his eyes also closed, his mouth fell open, and he fell asleep too! My husband looked back and forth from missionary to investigator. He couldn't believe they had both fallen asleep! Then suddenly, as if nothing had happened, the missionary woke up and continued his sentence in the exact spot where he had left off. The investigator awakened and started listening again. Later my husband commented to the missionary that he had fallen asleep. The missionary hadn't even realized it!
We were missionaries back in the early 1980's, and at that time we had small film projectors and would show filmstrips. One day my husband and his companion were teaching a family, and brought a filmstrip to show. The family all sat around, and my husband's companion sat on the floor and held the film projector in his lap. He showed the film on the wall of their living room. As they were watching the film, suddenly my husband noticed the picture begin to move. It moved all the way to the ceiling! He looked over and saw that his companion had fallen asleep, and was leaning back. The projector which was in his lap was now pointed at the ceiling! He looked over, and saw that the entire family were laying back watching the movie on the ceiling! :D
