Jury Duty Update

Well, I called in today and found that I was excused from jury duty. I think maybe I was having a little bit of stress stemming from my last experience with jury duty because I really thought I would have to appear. In some ways I wouldn't mind serving, but I would hope to get a little bit less stressful crime to have to be a juror for. I have to admit, that as a friend of mine once said, "I'm the glue that holds my family together", so my being gone would be difficult for my family, but it would be interesting to go through the entire juror process. But I am happy that I was excused this time.

My only service on a jury was a rape case in Northern Utah---it was way tough to listen to all of the testimonies and try to make sense of it all---we spent a great deal of time re-reading the notes and looking at the evidence---hours and hours and hours---and taking votes on guilt of innocence.

No one ever thought he was innocent but several of thought he might be over charged---after about 6 hours we finally found him guilty.

I tried really hard to get released and told the judge I was on a National Fire Team and we were up on rotation and that I needed to go with them---he said tough luck buddy part of being a citizen is serving on juries---I am really glad he didn't let me walk and that I had to sit through the entire trial and make the decision on guilt fot this thug---we didn't get a lot of information on him until after our decision but he had a rap sheet a mile long. He had a good attorney because he looked like a clean cut kid and was clean and well dressed---smart to do that.

I have never served on a jury, they have always plea-bargained or something the night before. I heard from people at the jail that once you've worked at the jail they don't want you on a jury, so I may never serve on one here.
