Squat Toilets

I finally have a squat toilet picture for you.  This one was taken by my son, and is probably the cleanest one I've ever seen!  Now there is a certain "squat toilet" ettiquette.  If there is no door to the stall, face outwards when you squat.  Otherwise your bare backside will be seen by all.

Squat toilets don't exist in America.  All of our toilets are sit down toilets.  However, if you are in San Francisco, you will notice that many of the sit down toilets have footprints on the seat.  That is because old habits are hard to break, and most chinese will still use the sit down toilet as a squat toilet.

If you are planning a trip to Asia, and don't want to have to squat to pee, you can try this alternative

If you need to do more than pee, I suggest you wait until you get home, or learn how to squat.  This has been an Asia public service announcement.  :P

Fortunately the Philippines is developed enough that they don't have squat toilets here. The closest I've seen is a toilet with no seat or commode, that you had to pour water down with a dipper to flush.

Omg, one of many reasons I'm glad that I live in America.

I have seen photos of a squat toilet before, but prefer our western variety. As a child my mother discouraged me fro sitting on the seat of any toilet away from home. I learned to squat and I'll admit I still do.
