Friday Loose Bloggers Consortium: Faces

I have noticed a weird phenomena while living here in China, which is that sometimes I see people's Asian "doppleganger". I know they are chinese, so have some different asian features, but I kid you not, there are some who look like Americans I know. I haven't found my own yet. That would be a weird experience to see the chinese version of me.

Another weird thing about living here is that the longer I live here, the more chinese faces look non-chinese to me. There have been many times that I have seen someone and questioned if they were chinese or caucasian. My kids think I'm nuts when I ask if a person I see is chinese or a foreigner, but honestly it is all becoming so normal to me that sometimes I can't tell.

And you know how they say "all china men look alike"? They don't, not even slightly. And in these modern times, they don't all have dark hair. Many people dye their hair. One time, many years ago, when we were living in Beijing, my husband's wallet was stolen. When he went to the police station, they asked him to give a description of the thief. How would you describe a chinese thief? I'm sure most people would say, "Dark hair, slanty eyes". But when the chinese ask this question, they want to know what kind of nose the person had. They want to know about the cheekbones and forehead. They want to know about the shape of their mouth. When you take these things in to account, you realize that really no group of people looks the same.

I wonder what the other consortium members have to say about faces. If you are curious, check out the links below.

I'm so white that in the States it's obvious I'm %100 Caucasian. But here in the Philippines, where they're not so used to foreigners, I've had several classmates ask me if I'm half-Filipino.

Delirious, perhaps it is time that you went to an opthalmologist!

You make a good point, D. Have never thought of this, but it's probably true no matter where one lives.

you'll probably see mine at some point because whenever i would do those "celebrity look-alike" things on facebook they would always give me chinese actresses

I suppose the lesson is we should all pay more attention to detail.

I used to see people in Ireland that reminded me of people at home. There were a couple of ladies in my little town who reminded me of a couple of friends of mine. Whenever I would see them, I would just smile to myself that it was a "tender mercy" given to me to not make me so homesick. I used to imagine myself walking up to these people and talking to them as if they were my own dear friends. Maybe I should have! :0)

I always look at the ears as a starting point - hanging lobes or not? It forces you to start noting detail.
