Ban the Grocery Store Sprinklers!

I've been thinking about how grocery stores have automatic sprinklers that spray the vegetables. I am convinced this is a tool to make more money for them! There are so many vegetables that I buy that spoil quickly because of the moisture sprayed on them by the grocery store sprinklers. A good example of this is cilantro. How long does cilantro last in your refrigerator? It only lasts a few days in mine before it starts to spoil. Recently I went to an Asian grocery store and bought cilantro. They don't have the sprinkler system in their stores. That cilantro lasted over a week! Some other vegetables ruined by water are bell peppers and cucumbers. There may be some vegetables that are kept fresher by the water, but I think overall it is a subtle way of making you have to come back and buy more!

I never thought about it before, but you're right. I wonder if it has more to do with sanitation (because of people constantly touching them) and not trying to supposedly keep them fresh?

It comes (as far as I recall hearing) from the idea that food looks more attractive/fresher/nicer when it's wet, so you're more inclined to buy it that way. It's not their problem, of course, that it doesn't last in your fridge once you've paid them for it.

I don't have this problem because I never eat vegetables. :)

We don't have automatic sprinklers in our Supermarkets, but the fruit and veg certainly have a shorter life than those bought in a Green Grocers - aka fruit & veg shop! Supermarkets also seem to go for even sized blemish free specimens, yet just as with people, we all know someone with the odd wart or wrinkle and it does not take away the pure soul inside.
