The Best Policy...

We went to buy a new DVD/VCR the other day. I have a lot of videos, and I was afraid the technology would phase out totally before I replaced my broken one. I looked at all of the stores and found the cheapest one at Walmart for $68.

My husband and I went together to buy it, but when we got to the aisle, we saw that almost every type if DVD/VCR was sold out. There was one that was $158. I did not want to spend that much money, but it had the ability to transfer videos to DVD. It was the only kind left. My husband said we should splurge to buy it. He had just gotten a bonus, so we decided to get the more expensive one. The clerk apologized that they had sold out of the cheaper ones that day, and he handed us the last expensive one. When we got up to the counter, it rang up as $68. I told the cashier that the price should have been $158 like the clerk had told us. I wondered how many other VCR/DVD players had been sold at that price. She said, "Well, it's ringing up as $68. I would love to give it to you for $68." Now, if it was originally $5, and rang up as $4.50, I probably wouldn't have pushed the issue, but they would lose double the price! So I told her to call the clerk and ask the price. She said, "Well, it is ringing up for $68, I think I should give it to you for that." I said, "I would feel guilty if this is supposed to cost $158." She said, "Okay, then for your conscience sake, I'll call and ask." As she was calling, my husband and I looked carefully at the box and discovered that it wasn't the more expensive one after all. The clerk confirmed that it should be $68. So all my fuss was about nothing. Or was it?

I would rather pay twice the original price, than pay too little, and always have the knowledge that I cheated the store.

I think I would have questioned it too. But since she was so adament about it, I'm not sure I would have insisted she check on it. I guess mainly because a lot of times I DO end up being wrong about it. :0+

I agree with Nene. Speak up, but don't be over-bearing in not accepting someone else's good gesture!

I would have done exactly what you did. It was worth checking, and now you have peace of mind about it.
