Interfaith Conference

Our congregation has been invited to participate in an Interfaith conference with other churches here in Antioch. I'm actually really excited about this for several reasons. First of all, I really hope that this will help to build understanding about our religion. There are so many people who think we don't believe in Jesus Christ. One time my husband told his coworker that he believes in Jesus Christ. The coworker responded, "No you don't, you just think you do." His view was that if our belief of the teachings of Jesus Christ weren't exactly as his, then we didn't really believe in Jesus Christ. He believes we are going to hell. I don't just say that flippantly, he really truly believes that. I have had people comment similar things on my blog. So I look forward to an opportunity to try to convey to people that we really truly are Christian. Secondly, it does make me feel good that they acknowledged us enough to invite us to the conference. Third, I am excited because our Ward choir is going to perform. I don't know yet if there will be a piano available, and if not, I will probably be playing an electric piano from our church. (run on batteries) We have sung many difficult songs over the past year that we could draw from, but our choir director really wants to sing some simple hymns that express our faith in Jesus Christ. It won't have bells and whistles, but hopefully we will have the spirit, which carries more weight than bells and whistles. :)

One of the people in charge of making assignments for this activity is an older gentleman who I think misunderstood the details. He thought the conference was last weekend, so asked my husband to go man an information table for our church there. This might be presumptuous, but I really wanted to go, so I invited myself along. My husband thought that was weird, but I didn't care, I really wanted to go. lol It is being held at a local Catholic church. We walked up to the door, and the Catholic Priest met us at the door. He had been waiting for a couple to come do some pre-marriage counseling, and thought we were them. lol He then explained that the conference is in September. They will have many different religions represented, including some native Indians who will erect a peace pole. They will have musical presentations from many different churches.

I don't know if I will be able to spend much time at the conference, but I plan to. I know I will be helping with the music, but I also hope I can help at the information table. I love to talk about the gospel, and hope I get that chance!

I do feel cheated if I go to a worship service and we don't get any songs about Jesus.

We Americans are rather self-centered and smug. And not just about religion. We believe that if anyone's opinion differs from ours, they MUST be wrong. There are certain things I KNOW are true, and certain things I believe to be true, but I love to hear the varied traditions of other faiths and cultures. Those same people who say the LDS people do not believe in Jesus Christ are also probably the same ones who believe he is an American. People. He was Jewish. Get over it!

And Looney, no worship service I have attended would have cheated you. Even most of the songs the choir at our prison sings are about Jesus. Congregational Hymns consistently deliver. But I agree, it just wouldn't be the same!

Hi D,

I wish you a very pleasant conference.

And yes, it is time you guys convey that you are as Christian as all other Christian denominations: you believe in Jesus as your saviour, you are Christian, period.
