Should Auld Acquaintance Be Forgot

Lately I've gotten in contact with many of my friends from my younger years. Most of this was through Facebook. I have to admit that in some ways it has been kind of weird. Some were old boyfriends, and I'll have to admit that wasn't as weird as I thought it would be. Some were mission friends, and some were college friends. I think what makes it the most weird is that I changed so much since then. Maybe all of the memories that have come flooding back have made it weird. I'm glad I got in contact with them though, even if we don't really talk much now. It's just nice to know that if I do want to talk to them, I can. :)

One of the people I got in contact with was one of my good friends in college. I haven't seen her since I got married! I did exchange Christmas cards with her one year, but then I lost contact. I was a new student at BYU, and she sought me out as a friend. I have always appreciated that she made that effort. She introduced me to my future sister in law, although none of us knew it as the time. ;) I think I'm correct in saying that she sought her out for a friend too.

One of the people I'm happy to be friends with on Facebook now is my mission president! Who knew he was on facebook?! Last I knew, he had cancer, but it is now in remission. He is one person who knows more about China than most people in our church. He was a professor at BYU and taught Asian studies for many years. His wife was a law professor there, and is now running for Congress! (They sought her out.) I would vote for her, she is one smart cookie! His first wife died while he was serving as president of the Taiwan, Taipei temple. Then he met this second wife and it was a match made in heaven!

I have thought about many of these friends many times over the years and wondered how life was treating them. It's been interesting to see what has happened to them in their lives. And it's interesting to reflect on how my life has changed since I knew them way back when.

I think sometimes people are a little afraid to contact old friends because they don't quite know what to say to them. That's why Facebook is so good. It's non-threatening in that you don't have to say a lot, you just can say "Hi". :0)

I just heard from my sister an incredible story, which I hope will feature shortly in my blog as a guest post. A lady in New York saw my blog via a google search, saw my name and went to Facebook to see if she could locate me, but located my brother, got our sister's details and contacted her. They were neighbours and college mates in the mid sixties! They had lost touch with each other and reconnected last night!

Amazing thing, the internet.
