Silver Threads Among the Gold

A fellow blogger made a comment on this blog the other day, so I went over to check out her blog. (Click here for her blog.) Her profile name is "Silver Strands". I read her profile, and discovered that she has a great service that she performs. She grows out her graying hair, then has her head shaved and donates her hair to be used to make wigs for women who are breast cancer patients.

I have to admit that I think this is a wonderful service, and I am tempted at the idea of shaving my head. But my only problem is that I can't stand to have my hair long. I had my hair long when I was younger, but for some reason it really bothers me now that I'm older. For me, giving away the hair wouldn't be as much of a sacrifice as wearing it long while I grew it out. I guess I never realized that anyone would want my gray hair. I always thought they wanted hair that was a better color. But I guess so many of these women are also gray, so having a gray wig makes them feel like themselves. I will have to think about this, maybe I can convince myself to suffer through the long hair. My daughter grew her hair out really long this year. It was almost down to her waist. She had it cut, and has donated it to be made in to a wig. I really should think seriously about this. I mean, I don't even have to think to grow my hair. It grows without any effort on my part. That's the least I could do for someone else. Dang, I really hate long hair on myself...do you think I could grow the hair on my legs instead? ;)

Wow! You're my first "shout out" :) Thanks so much for mentioning me on your blog. I'm so flattered. And I know what you mean about growing out the gray. It can be really frustrating - how to get thru each day with awkward hair!

But anyway, thanks so much for your support, your comments, and visiting my blog regularly. Don't you love that we can be friends even tho we've never met?

When did you serve your mission? I was in Japan Tokyo North Mission 1980-81 and have a friend who served in your mission around that time. Diane something ... it's going to take me a while to remember her last name. Ugh. I hate when I forget things like that! She's from Downey Idaho ...

Thanks again for everything!

Making friends through the blogging world is one of the best things about blogging!

I served in the Taiwan, Taipei mission from 1982-1984. My husband served in the Taiwan, Kao Hsiung mission at the same time, but we didn't meet there. We actually met at the Chinese house at BYU. I didn't know any sisters named Diane. They were all named Sister. ;) Just kidding. :)

I don't think it even has to be that long - a friend's mom donates her hair every year and shaves it almost all the way down (I don't know if I'd have the guts to do that) but her hair isn't that long when she does it

If you grew your hair long, you could just put it up everyday and not have to deal with it hanging down your back. Either that or you could also grow your armpit hair long. :0+
