Mormon Helping Hands

Today in the State of California was "Mormon Helping Hands Day". Members from all over the State were involved in community service projects. Our Stake divided up to do several different projects. I don't mean to sound like a whiner, but the one our group did was definitely the hardest! Some of the groups were laying bark at a nearby park. Another group was planting trees and painting benches. Another group was cleaning a trail. I'm not sure what other projects were done. our group painted the buildings at the fairground. There are three long fair buildings. I really worried about whether or not we could finish! We have over 150 people there helping, but it was a huge job! We also had some sprayers, but still had to do a big share of the painting by hand. After I'd been working for over 4 hours, I started to poop out. I went to find my husband to tell him that I thought I had reached my limit. I found him laying on the lawn supervising some teenagers. I layed there next to him and finally said, "I think if we are at the point where we are laying around, we have probably reached our limit." So we left. From what I could tell, it looked like they were almost finished. It's nice to get the project completed.

I don't think the park people were really mentally prepared for as many volunteers as we had. The woman organizing our efforts told them to expect 100, but when we got there this morning, they had 10 rollers and paint trays layed out. After a few minutes she told them we needed more, so they brought out 20 more. After a few minutes she told them we needed more and they said, "We just put out 20." She said, "I know, and those are being used." The final count was over 150, so I think they were a little surprised. One of the park people asked me what church we were from. After I told her she said, "We really appreciate your help. If there is ever anything we can do to help you guys out, let us know. I believe in paying back." I thanked her for her offer. But later I started thinking I should have said, "You could come to church!" ;)

Well, I don't know if I would have said it like that, I wouldn't want her to think the church just helped so they could get people to come to church. But I would have told her she was welcome to come anytime she wanted! And maybe that's the same thing, I don't know.
