It's Off!

Well, my son had his final interview last night for his mission, and the papers are being submitted to the church today. The Stake president said that he could get his call as early as next Thursday, but it probably will take up to two weeks. My daughter suggested that we take bets on where he was going. But I kind of felt like that would put the focus on where he will serve instead of the goal of just serving. Also, everyone tends to focus on foreign missions in their guesses, and it's highly possible he will be sent State side. For those who don't know, missionaries don't choose where they will serve, they are assigned by inspiration and according to the current needs of the church. Secretly, I do have my guess, but as I said, I don't want to focus on that. On one hand, he has been prepared throughout his life to accept different cultures, and learn other languages. We have always introduced our children to foods from other cultures. I think he would do well in any foreign country. But on the other hand, I'm thankful for those missionaries who stay in the States and try to help this country recover from the current moral decline. Either way, I know he will be a good missionary, and I know that the best thing that will come out of his service is the learning that he personally will gain, and the memories he will have at the end of his two years.

That is so exciting! The other night "someone" didn't like dinner once again (he's a steak and potatoes type of guy), and someone else made the comment that he was sure to be sent to serve a mission where there was only exotic food. We'll see :)

It is a blessing to see children desire to serve. My son who called himself "Mr. Oversized"(6'4")learned so much from the Taiwan Mission trip in July, is anxious for further mission work.

When Elder Bednar was here for our Stake Conference, he had an "open session" in the Priesthood session Saturday afternoon. He let the men ask him any questions they wanted to. One person asked how the general authorities decided where to send each missionary-or was it really personalized. Elder Bednar said that the apostles go through and make each selection individually. Then the First Presidency looks at each call, once again individually, and decides if that is the right place for that missionary to go. If they don't feel right, they will change it. He said they spend hours doing that. So know that no matter where he goes, he truly is being sent to where the Lord wants him to go.

Question: Is your son going to serve after his high school or college?

My son has already attended one year of college. He gets a deferrment from the college to serve a mission for two years. Young men must be at least 19 years old to serve. Young women must be 21 years old. I served a mission, as did my husband. We both served in Taiwan. I served in the North, and he served in the South.

You opened another world of view for me. Thanks.

Who says you have to leave the country to get exotic food? Chicken pot pie in the deep south is likely to still have the beak! Louisiana serves frog legs. Escargot is all over the place. And don't forget sweet breads! There is a big, mouth-watering country out there, and you never need a passport or gammaglobulin (sp?) shot to get it! I personally eat Japanese cuisine any chance I get, and never leave the states! On the other hand, with his dark hair and skin, he'll probably go to Sweden or Denmark....

That was a very interesting comment, Nene. I didn't know that, although I do believe the calls are inspired, and can't wait to see where he is going. (Salt Lake South? JK)

I am so proud of him!! I think that is so awesome that he's done what he's needed to do with his life to be able to do this! I think it's really cool! I think he will probably get a foreign mission just because, as you've said, he's been exposed to so much culture in his life and he might even go to China, which would be really neat! :D
