Alpha Waves

My husband and I always laugh about how easily he can fall asleep when I am talking to him. We joke about the hypnotic effect of my voice, and that it works better than sleeping pills. I really don't take offense that he falls asleep, because I know it isn't because he isn't listening. Today I had more confirmation that it isn't about what I'm saying, it's the way I say it.

I was listening to Dr. Laura's radio program today and she was giving advice to a man whose child had fears about he and his wife going on vacation without the children. She suggested that he should talk to the child and ask what fears they have about them leaving. She said that when he talks to them, he should keep his voice flat and sort of hypnotic. She said that when you speak that way, it actually creates alpha waves in the brain, and makes the person relax. Dr. Psycho will have to let me know if this is something therapists are taught to do.

I wonder if I talk this way all the time, because even in the grocery store, people open up and talk to me. People call on the phone and end up telling me their problems, even if I don't know them. Maybe it's my voice? So just for the record, I'm not boring, I'm hypnotic! lol

How about the other kind of hypnotic effect? When I talk, my husband often thinks of the programming that he is working on.

I never thought about it that way - about being the tone of your voice. Interesting.

When I was taught to hyptnise, we were taught to talk in mono-tone and with a soft and low tone. I have seen this hapen so many times, that it is quite funny....Lonehawk

how interesting, maybe that's why they tell you to keep your voice calm in an argument too!
