Working the System

So this morning I drove my son to school to take the first of his final exams. Students can NOT be late for exams. As we were nearing the school, my son said, "Oh no! I forgot my lanyard! Turn around and go home!" I said, "We can't go home, we don't have time, you will be late for your final. Just go to the security office and get a new one. If you go before 9:00 you won't get detention." He said, "I don't have time, it's almost 9:00 now." I said, "Well, I guess you will have to get a detention for not wearing your lanyard." He said, "I'll see if I can borrow one from a friend." I kept thinking about the numerous amount of students who go without lanyards every day and never get caught. A neighbor boy hasn't worn his for about a month.

After school I said, "So how did the lanyard thing go?" He said, "Let me show you." He pulled out a lanyard that he had found in his backpack. It wasn't a school lanyard, it went to something else. He had torn a small piece of paper and clipped it to the lanyard. He said, "If the teacher asks to see it, I just hold it up like this." He held the paper in his hand so that you could see the bottom, but couldn't see what it looked like. I tell you...this kid is smooth. All I can say is, the lanyards are teaching the kids a lot of things, like: how to work the system, how to be sneaky, how to fake the teachers out. It's amazing the things kids learn these days. :P

So now tell him to keep his regular lanyard in his back pack, and he won't ever have the problem again. Don't let him take it off without putting it in his bag. (I know, he then forgets his pack, but it's the best solution I can come up with) :o)

I guess we can't complain that the kids don't learn anything about right and wrong at school!

lol maybe only in his rebellious spirit. But actually, when I was his age, I was terrified of getting in trouble. I was sort of a miss goody goody. There is no way I would have walked out of the house without my lanyard. Now I'm older, I tend to weigh the consequences lol.
