Kids These Days

Every morning I make lunches for my kids. I have to admit I'm not a very good lunch maker. I pretty much give them the same thing every day. I have tried to vary it, but they always complain about new changes, so I stick with the boring old. Usually I give them a drink, some kind of jello or fruit, some chips and a sandwich. I know...not the healthiest, but they won't eat the healthy stuff. When I was a kid, my mom made me peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on thick, dry homemade bread. I didn't have a drink with it, but usually she would put in a little baggy of fritos. Often I would have an apple. That was it.....for my entire elementary school years. Occasionally she would let me buy my lunch, it was 40 cents back then. I remember because she would give me a quarter, a dime, and a nickel. I always ate my lunch, and was happy to have it. My kids grumble, and often throw out their sandwich. The other day my son confessed that he traded his sandwich for a package of candy that some kid had. Part of me was shocked that he would trade his sandwich for candy. If I were him, I wouldn't want to be hungry the rest of the day. But then part of me started thinking about that other boy. Here was a 14 year old boy who WANTED to give up his candy so he could have a sandwich for lunch. It gives me hope that some kids do appreciate having good food, and it also makes me feel that I must be doing something right if my kids can go without a sandwich for lunch and be okay until they get home.
On a side note, my older boys have had a very finicky habit lately. For some reason they got it in to their head that the last bit of milk in the jug is spoiled. They think that sometimes people leave it sitting out for a few minutes, and that by the time you get down to the end of the jug, it is sure to have a funny taste to it. I never noticed any different taste, so I always drink that part. My husband suggested I just pour it in to the new jug of milk and they will never know. I wonder, do you think they will be able to tell? I think this is the mark of a very spoiled, and rich generation that we get picky about food that is good and healthy.

I can tell when milk is going bad, sometimes before the date. My MOm will smell it, drink it, but I can't. It has an awful smell to it and an awful taste to it.

Do NOT in any circumstances pour the bad milk into good milk.

That wouldn't be good parenting. :)

Hey Delirious!

My name is Max, and I found you through the "why we blog" list.

Kids nowadays are incredibly different than I was: they are more picky, they fearlessly talk back; and sometimes I swear they are smarter!
But I still find them real cute :).

About the milk issue, I can't be of much help, since here in Portugal the milk comes in a PET box, and in my house it never stays long enough to go sour.

I hope you can visit me soon :).

Cheers
