Conference Customs

This weekend we watched the 177th semiannual general conference of the Church that was broadcast on BYU television. I have to admit that we are lazy watchers, and the pictures below pretty much sum up our experience. Note that the first one has my second son wrapped in a comforter laying on a mat on the floor in front of the television. The rest of us sprawl on the couch, or bean bags on the floor.

One custom we have is that we make "Conference Cake" to eat. I actually make two of them so we can eat it on both Saturday and Sunday for all 4 sessions of conference. Here is the recipe:

Conference Cake
Mix together until crumbly the following
2 1/2 C flour
1 C brown sugar
1 C white sugar
1 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 C oil

Save 2/3 of a C of the above mixture to use for topping

To first mixture, add 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder. Mix well. Now make an indentation in the mixture in the bottom of the bowl. Put in 1 tsp. baking soda, 1/2 C water, 1/2 C milk, 1 egg well beaten. Blend well and put in greased/ floured pan.

To saved 2/3 c of topping, add 1 tsp cinnamon, and about 1/2 C chopped nuts. Sprinkle this mixture on top of the batter. Bake 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes.

I particularly enjoyed Elder Jeffrey R. Holland's, and Elder Melvin J. Ballard's talks. For some reason, the Saturday sessions are always my favorites. I have to admit that I enjoyed conference, but I really need to read the talks again when they are available online.
