My family is getting to the ages that they are more difficult to buy gifts for. So this year I took a big piece of butcher paper and wrote everyone's names on it, and asked them to give me a list of things they would like. Let me just say right off; the list is not helpful. In our family, everyone is a comedian, and all of the kids wrote things on each other's lists.....and on mine and my husband's. My husband's list included things like "cheese, (he always makes cheese plates during the holidays) tight leather motorcycle riding outfit, a bra...". Mine included such things as "beard mower for her face, chain mail underwear..." I'll spare you the rest.
Needless to say, their list didn't help me on Black Friday, and I didn't buy any gifts that day. Maybe I'll just get them each a big lump of coal...

maybe you should buy some of those suggested gifts - THAT would teach them! LOL and you totally SHOULD give them rocks and sticks (in a box) mom did it to dad one year and it was hilarious (he had real gifts though too)
Hi D - getting them what they wrote sounds like the plan. By the way - what is Black Friday? I have a faint recollection of having heard of it - is it something to do with a kind of shopping day? ( maybe Im totally off-beam and it's some sort of US religious festival?)
Bunc, Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. It happens to be the biggest shopping day of the year for retailers. It's the day when the sales are the best. I'm not sure why they call it "black" Friday, except maybe that is the one day their books are out of the red. :)
um... you better check that list twice. coal is on it.
Better yet....just get them bizarre things that YOU would like. Then when they complain, you can just say, "Well, I asked you to write on the list..." Then you already have everything YOU want,. so don't have to take anything back to the store.
ROFL! Mr Giggles you are my hero. What a great idea! Buy them a nice blender, or a beautiful flower arrangement that will just fit on the piano.

Bunc, when I first came across the term, I thought that it was something like black pudding!
That put aside, I am blessed. At my age, in my society, no one expects gifts from me and no one has to give me any. We simply take some sweets or flowers when we visit each other and that is all. Our major festival, Diwali everyone gets new clothes and the women, some jewelry. Fireworks and crackers are for the common pool. Life is much simpler over here.
D - given your description I wasnt too far wrong then saying that it was a US religious festival!
