Friday Loose Bloggers Consortium: Mobile Telephony

I don't like to talk on the phone.  I don't know why exactly.  I know that I don't mind talking with people, and if we were in the same room, we could talk for hours.  But I don't really like talking on the phone.  I think part of it comes down to the feeling that I'm trapped.  If I'm at home, I have to stay close to the stationary phone.  If I'm out, I have to use one of my hands to hold the phone.  I suppose I could get a mobile phone head set, but I also don't know that I have enough to talk about to warrant buying one.  I'm just not a phone person.  Therefore, I don't carry a cell phone.

Occasionally I've carried a cell phone if I had a particular need.  For awhile I had a church position that required me to have open contact with the Bishop, so I needed a phone so he could contact me if needed.  Sometimes, if I know I'm going to need to meet up with someone, I carry a phone so that we can coordinate our schedules.  But overall, I don't really have any need for a phone.

Having said all of that, I must say that yesterday I was thinking that I should start carrying a cell phone again.  No, it isn't going to be used for talking to people.  See, what I really need a cell phone for is to be used as a stealth camera!  There are so many things that I see, and that happen to me on a daily basis here in China, and I'm too embarrassed to walk around taking pictures with my camera.  But a cell phone camera can be used in disguise while pretending to make a call!  The other thing that would work is an Ipod.  I could even take video with that!

Although I think cell phone technology is wonderful, don't expect to call and chat with me any time soon.  I'll answer if you call, but it's not my favorite thing.  If you really want to talk to me, I suggest you come visit.  :)

Curious about the mobile telephony of the other consortium members?  Check out what they have to say about the subject:

I share your aversion to the phone, landline or mobile. I think that it is so impersonal and often I end up being a captive audience of one for some frustrated soul and I don't quite know how to terminate it. In a face to face situation the body language can do this effectively.

You are on. I will visit. Not while you are in China though.

I grew up answering the phone so I take it in my stride. During my working like telephones, tannoys and microphones all played a part.

These days I carry a mobile phone at all times.

1. Because I travel so much on my own.
2. For medical reasons.
3. So Elly can check up on me when I am not at home.

I'm not much of phone person myself but…

If someone calls I will talk as long as they like. It's not always possible to visit, which makes the phone a great invention.

Nobody calls anymore; what you do is you carry a phone around to text people. That way you can take your time to respond if you need to, but in case anything important happens you can be reached.

Good idea re the camera. I pretend to text when I'm taking photographs. Usually of my children who groan at my sentimentality.
