Friday Loose Bloggers Consortium: Dominion and Stewardship

Wow, is it Friday already? I'm a tad late in posting, sorry. And what a doozy of a topic!

My mind automatically goes back to the Garden of Eden. In Genesis 1:26, we read, "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth." What does it mean to be given dominion? According to the dictionary, it means to have rule over. I think it fitting that the topic today also includes the word "stewardship". This rule has a slightly different meaning, and has more to do with taking responsibility for the care of. I like to think that this is more what God had in mind when giving man dominion over every living thing on the Earth. Some might take the word "dominion" to mean that we can recklessly use up the resources and living things on the earth. But the term stewardship implies accountability. It implies that we will have to give a reckoning of what we did with the things of which we were given responsibility.

I do believe it is our responsibility to care for the Earth, and the living things in it. We can't continue to greedly use up our natural resources and the living things. We need to be prudent, and think of ways to protect animals from becoming extinct. Some blame extinction on over population. I blame it on bad management. I think God intended us to procreate and populate the planet. I believe God gave us ample resources to do this. But it is up to us to use those resources wisely so that we have enough for our needs, and the needs of future generations. This is difficult to do when the media constantly tells us that what we have is not enough. But we need to check our lustful intentions, and learn to appreciate what we already have. In this way, we can take care of those things over which we have stewardship, and assure that our posterity will enjoy the Earth as much as we have.

Now go and check out how the other consortium members handled this topic:

You made a much better blog than my whimpering one!

Yes, yes, yes...we need to wake up to the way our planet is literally going down the drain...and it is not ours exclusively to despoil and denigrate.

Each one of us has to do our best to save the planet.
