Friday Loose Bloggers Consortium: Why Did I Do That?

Wow, I think I could write pages and pages on this topic! lol

Well, I am going to tell you one of the worst things I've ever done. It might just keep you awake at night, so beware. :) It was pretty stupid.

My husband and I, and our then 3 children were driving from California to Utah. When we were in the middle of Nevada, our car broke down. My husband told me to wait with the children, and he would walk ahead to a rest stop and see if he could get a ride in to town to call a tow truck. I think we were about 30 miles from the closest town. So he took off, and I sat in the car on the side of the road with my children.

It began to get dark, and my children began to get fussy. I began to worry about my husband, and wondered if he was even able to get a ride in to town. I was a little nervous sitting there in the car on the side of the road. Suddenly a car pulled up and two men got out. They came and asked me if I needed any help. They were very worried about leaving me there alone. They asked me if they could give me a ride in to town. I thought about it, and thought that maybe this was our one chance to get the ride in to town to call a tow truck. I also was worried about staying there alone in the car. This is the part where I can't believe what I did. I decided to go with these two men, and drive to the rest stop to see if my husband was there.

I got all my kids in the back seat, and we started driving. It hit me then that if we didn't find my husband, I was going to have a hard time getting back to my car! I also started thinking about how stupid it was that I got in the back seat of a stranger's car! I was nervous, and couldn't think straight to make good decisions.

We came to the rest stop, and saw that there were a lot of big trucks stopped there. The driver of my car began to ask around to see if anyone had seen my husband. He even yelled across the road to the other side where there was another rest stop, and found out that my husband was there! So the children and I crossed the road and wento where my husband was. I thanked our good Samaritans, and they drove away.

My husband had found a trucker who was willing to help us call a tow truck. He let the children and I sit in his truck to keep warm. He invited me to eat some oranges that he had up on the bunk bed in the top of his truck. I looked at them, but they were mostly rotten, so we didn't eat any. But he was very kind to us. We got a tow truck, and were taken to town where we stayed in a motel for a couple of days while our car was being repaired.

So looking back, there were many mistakes I made. I still am not sure if I should have stayed with the car. There are dangers if a woman stays alone in a car on the side of the road. But I don't think we could have dragged the kids all the way up the highway, so I guess that was the best option. But my biggest mistake was getting in the car of a total stranger. In this case, they were well meaning, and everything turned out all right. But still, why did I do that?!

Not an easy call in that situation, but thankfully it all worked out and you are here to tell the tale.

I can relate to that story as a similar thing happened to me many years ago. It did not have a happy ending however and my colleague and I had to assuage some hurt egos and pockets for having gone off in a taxi shared with six other passengers, leaving our car and driver to wait till next morning to get help. Yes, we do often things at the spur of the moment and later on wish that we had acted differently.

Incidentally, I find that the topic listed on Conrad's blog is different. It is My wildest fantasy!

Sometimes when I was in situations a bit like that, my wildest fantasy was for someone to stop and offer me a lift. Often it's the scuzziest cars who deign to stop to help you, while sleek automobiles speed by.

Maybe the Lord protected you that day and sent those kind Samaritans. And maybe instead of making you feel like you made the right decision, he let you be scared just so you'd never do it again!

It does seem that God's providence gets us through life.

Maybe that was a time when we had more faith and trust in strangers and the Lord to take care of us.

Today, we are petrified by the bogey of abusive and wicked strangers and so are our kids!!
