What I've Been Up To

When I planned to go to China, I read online that I would be allowed to take needlework with me. This really surprised me, but the only stipulation was that I didn't bring sharp scissors. So I found a pair of blunt nosed ones, and took my crochet project with me. I found a tutorial for these pillow cases online, and I wanted to learn how to make them. I sewed the pillowcase at home, and put in the foundation stitches. I first made the one pictured on the right. I finished the crochet in about an hour on the plane. I had thought it would take me much longer, and was disappointed that it wouldn't take up all my spare time on the plane. lol Last night I decided to make the second one. We watched a movie while I worked, and it was done, including crochet, before the movie was over. I didn't like how the first one turned out, so I changed the second one. I didn't like the foundation stitches done with yarn. It looks ugly to me. So I did the second one's foundation stitches with embroidery thread. (three strings, double stranded) I think the second one turned out much better. Now I'm trying to decide if I want to take the first one apart and do it like the second one. But I think they turned out cute, and I'm looking forward to making the second set, for which I have already purchased material. Then I'm going to make a receiving blanket with this kind of edging on it. :)

Then yesterday my son told me he needed a gold cape because he was going to act the part of a King. He is acting in a 5 man play that opens this week, so I assumed this cape was for the play. I rushed out to Walmart yesterday morning and found some inexpensive cloth. I hurriedly whipped up this cape for him. It's not exactly gold, but it's close enough. I didn't use a pattern, so it's not perfect, but I think it will be fine. I had to drop off another prop at their practice yesterday, so I took the cape too. Come to find out, the cape was for his acting class, not this play. :S Oh well, at least I got it made in time. lol

Fun! I love the crochet edging! A friend and I are going to learn how to do it. Email me the instructions. My friend wants to put edging around a baby blanket and I want to do pillowcases.
