Owning a Big Dog

Advantage: If a dog attacks my dog, she will win
Disadvantage: If a dog attacks my dog, she will win and I have to pay vet fees for the other dog.

Advantage: I don't have to lean down to pet her.
Disadvantage: She thinks she should be a lap dog.

Advantage: She's good protection
Disadvantage: Bigger dog = bigger poop

Advantage: She can keep up with me when I walk
Disadvantage: She takes up an entire seat in the car.

For those who are thinking about getting a big dog, here are some things to consider:
--buy a "haltie" to use when walking your dog. It gives me total control over my 95 pound dog. When I just use a collar she can out power me.
--Big dogs require exercise. If you can't commit to walking them daily, get a lap dog instead.
--Make sure you socialize them while they are still young so that they develop good dog manners.
--buy "cow knuckles" (at the pet store) for them to chew on so that they don't chew on your fence instead. :) Never give your dog bones from the table, because they could splinter and get stuck in the dog's throat. That could cause a hefty vet bill.

I think this will be my last big dog. I think as I get older I need one that is a little less powerful. :)

the good thing is that as she gets older she will get calmer and lazier so she won't be as much trouble

I agree with you entirely on the size of the dog. The smaller the better as one gets older. Since both my hips have been replaced, I am willing to keep a dog at home only if my son is willing to exercise it, care for it etc. I am just too scared, though I would love to keep one.
