Your Government Tax Dollars At Work

My daughter got a job working for a nearby city. She is working with a program that helps people make their homes more energy efficient. This is what my husband refers to as one of Obama's "make work" programs that came about as a result of his "economic stimulus package". The program only hires people between the ages of 18 and 22. They said the idea is to keep the youth off the streets. I know our neighborhood is much safer that my daughter is off the streets. ;) Basically she will be going to the homes of people who call in to ask to be part of this program. She will help them find ways to be more energy efficient like changing out their old lightbulbs for energy efficient ones, checking the insulation in their attic, switching out the thermostat, etc.

She went to training last Friday. It's hard for a college graduate to sit in a training where they go line by line and tell you how to fill in work information papers. What will take them days to teach, she could learn in a couple of hours. But hey, they pay her for her time. The best part of training is that she is the only caucasian face in the group, and has been learning some really cool slang. As part of their training, they were required to make up some skits. She was coached on the right slang to use in her group's skit. :) And the other people in the group got a kick out of listening to her deliver her lines.

She leaves for the missionary training center the first of September, and this job ends in August, so it's perfect for her. It gives her a chance to earn some mission money. She only works from 10:3o -6:00 Monday through Friday; so it's only 36 hours a week. (Don't want to have to pay for those pesky benefits that full-timers get. ;) I think it's an ideal summer job, although she is over qualfied for it. But you can't look a gift horse in the mouth, even if that horse is Uncle Sam. :)

What kind of pay do they get?

I believe it's close to minimum wage, but I can't remember what she told me. But it's a job. :)

Do they go out in groups? If not make her carry mace or something just in case!

P.S. If she hates it she could always quit and get a job at a clothing store so she could get a discount on her mission clothes! ;)
