Try Some Wheat

This may sound weird, but I'm still tired from the emergency preparedness fair yesterday! In the pictures below, you can see that we served wheat bread samples and wheat cereal samples. It's amazing how much people love homemade bread! (although I'm sure the apricot jam didn't hurt. :) And believe it or not, I didn't even try any of the bread. I don't even know if the bread I made was any good. Oh well, people ate it anyway. lol I did try some of the cereal because I had some yogurt with my lunch, and I love the wheat berries in it. Can I take a moment to extol the wonderful virtues of wheat berries? :) Here's how you make them:

one part wheat kernels
two parts water
dash of salt (optional)
Place in crockpot. Set on "low" heat setting. Cook over night. Voila! Hot cereal is ready for you in the morning.

Here is what you can do with this cereal once you make it.
---put in yogurt..yum!
---eat for breakfast
---use as meat extender in dishes like meatloaf
---add to soups to add texture and nutrition
---add to casseroles
---add to salads
---freeze it to use later.

Remember Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in the Bible? They ate grains and were very healthy! In addition, as we saw with the food storage of Joseph who was sold in to Egypt, that wheat stores very well for many years. In the past it was thought that wheat was only good for 25-30 years, but now they are finding that it can store much longer. Try adding some wheat to your diet and see how it makes you feel! Caution though, don't try switching 100%. Your body needs to adapt to wheat. Just try introducing a little at a time. I say try the cereal first, it's delicious!

Hey thanks for the recipe for wheat berries. I'm sure I have it in my food storage recipes somewhere, but this will motivate me to make them. I'd love them!

I like wheat berries but hated waiting for them to cook--this makes it so they are already done when you get up.

My husband doesn't like his wheat berries too "mushy" so we put the crockpot on a timer when we go to bed. About 5 hours on low gives just the right texture.

Glad you survived Saturday!
