Kansas City School Closures

I heard this morning that Kansas City is closing HALF of it's schools! You can read the story by clicking here. While I understand the problem with budget cuts, I don't understand why it always has to be education that is cut! How about cutting some of the expenditures for gardening of the Governor's mansion. Or how about cutting his pay, as well as that of the other bazillion people who work at the state capitol? You never hear about them cutting their salaries, you only hear about the salaries of teachers being cut. Is this how much our country values education?

AMEN! In our state they are cutting retirement for new teachers! They won't have ANYONE who wants to work here! I'll bet the politicians will be taken care of, though! None of them would last 1 hour with any normal 8th grade class!

I guess in America we have the right word: "Politics," which can be broken into two roots; "poly," meaning "many," and "ticks," meaning "blood-sucking parasites!"

D,

I also heard about this and I totally agree with you. Cutting on education and arts (in general) is a huge mistake that will have dreadful repercussions on any country's future (this is basic economics and politics).

Cheers

In an earlier round of cuts in our school district, it was determined that everyone could keep their job if there was an across the board 10% cut. All the unions (teachers, custodians) agreed, except for the administrators union, so the deal was nixed and job cuts took place! At least that is the story I got from a high up source ...

I agree with you, Delirious. A friend of mine in San Diego already has her notice that she will probably be laid off, but she won't know for sure until May. I think it is a sad day for education. Teachers were already underpaid and underappreciated before all this!

All too true. Even our state, which has had money for educators, has been feeling the pinch. Our money comes from oil and natural gas. That is a slow industry right now, because there is no incentive to drill and produce. Those in the know say that this will not change until there is an administration change. Keep waiting. At least 21/2 years before it has a chance of getting better. :o(
