How I Got My Phobia

I was reminded today of why I have a phobia of roaches. It's more of a compilation of events, but either way, they freak me out. I hope my story doesn't do the same to you.

My first phobia beginnings happened when we lived in Texas. The roaches there are HUGE! And not only are they huge, but they FLY! And not only are they huge, and fly, they make a CLICKING noise!! And not only are they huge, fly, and make a clicking noise, they fly DIRECTLY AT YOU! I think that's pretty self explanatory.

Stage two: I did quite a bit of babysitting growing up. One day this woman asked me to come babysit her two kids, a little boy and a baby. When I got there, I was sitting on the couch, and noticed roaches climbing on the back of it. That creeped me out, and I sat clear up on the edge of the couch, and kept my eye on the roaches to make sure none climbed on me. I needed to change the baby's diaper, so I went in the bedroom, only to find that a dirty cloth diaper had been left on the ground and roaches were running through it. I quickly changed the diaper and hurried to the bathroom to wash my hands. It was dark in the hall, and as I pushed open the door to the bathroom, a roach fell from the door and grazed my arm on it's way to the ground. I can't remember if I screamed, but I wouldn't be surprised if I did.

The woman had told me to make cheese sandwiches for the kids for lunch. I went in to the kitchen and got out a pan. But when I went to put it on the stove, I saw that roaches were running in and out of the stove. I reached for a bottle in the cupboard, but roaches were running in and out of the cupboard. I decided it would be safer to get one out of the dishwasher. There were roaches IN THE DISHWASHER!! That was the last straw for me. I called my Mom and had her come get us. I couldn't cook with roaches running around the food. When my Mom came to get us, she made me shake everything before putting it in the car. She didn't want any of the roaches moving to our house!

I think fumigating is expensive and not very healthy. But if I ever get roaches in my house, I'm definitely paying the money, even if I have to go without other things. I HATE ROACHES!!!

Ooooo, memories of college ... I lived in off campus apartments near the university in Knoxville, TN. The apartments were all full of roaches, but there was nothing we could do. We could fumigate, but a few hours later they would be migrating in from the other apartments. The sport when we were bored was to turn the lights out for 5 minutes, then turn them back on and see how many we could smash as they went scurrying for cover. Those were the days!

We had roaches when I was a teen in Texas. It was disgusting, but when you're dirt poor, they're hard to get rid of. Not all the places we lived had them, though. We moved 7 times in 4 1/2 years, the last 6 in the same area so I wouldn't have to be constantly switching schools. The worst place, though was the one that had the rats.

Oh Mike....I think I could write a whole new post about rats. lol Actually, I don't feel as phobic about them though.

In Texas, the roaches are impossible to get rid of. If you spray, they just move next door for awhile until your neighbors spray, then they come back. Here where I live in Antioch, our biggest pest problem is ants. I think they named it "Ant"ioch for a reason. We live on one big ant hill.

I was at my mother-in-law's house in West Texas one time and went into her kitchen at night. I turned on the light and there on the counter was the absolute biggest cockroach I had ever seen in my life! Not only that, but as soon as I saw it, another one ran out! I'm not kidding, nor exagerating when I say that roach was at least 4 or 5 inches long and stood 2-3 inches off the counter. I found out they were "tree roaches" and she had a bad infestation of them but had put poison out since she had tried the regular roach killers and they hadn't worked. That was the only time I have ever seen a bug at my mother-in-law's house, but that was enough. I get the creeps just thinking about them!

When Mr. Giggles and his family moved in with us, they brought some furniture from their storage shed. Unfortunately, they also brought the red German cockroaches from the storage shed too. We put out poison, sprayed, set off bug bombs, and still could not get rid of them. Finally, we noticed they were in our stove, so we took the stove outside, covered it in a plastic bag, and set off TWO bug bombs inside the bag. Afterwards, I went to move the stove back in, and more roaches came out. I found that they were getting up into the insolation in the stove, and it filtered the poison enough so that they did not die. We hauled the stove off to the dump, bought a new one, and got rid of our roaches!

Cockroaches are now a global phenomenon. I can't stick the sight of them either. I use a regular check up and treatment to keep them away. http://www.godrejhicare.com/services_intelligel.asp

When we moved into one apartment, we had bought cereal for the next morning. It was Honeycomb, so when I poured a bowl of BLACK, I knew something was wrong. The black then crawled away!

We found a recipe for roach poison, which uses Borax, flour, onion,s water, etc. You make little balls and put them in "high traffic" areas. We never saw another roach in that place! I'm sure you could find that recipe online. It worked like a charm!
