Eat UP!

I was going to post this as a comment on Lindsay-Weaver's blog, but decided I had written enough I should just make a whole post out of it. lol

Her post talked about how when it is the holidays, you shouldn't pass up the great food that is only avaliable then. Save your dieting for January! :)

I have this friend who is always dieting. We went to dinner recently with other women, and she passed up the ice cream and cookie for dessert. She said, "I"m trying to be good." I felt like saying, "Does that mean that the rest of us are bad, and you are the only good person here?" I mean, seriously, what is she trying to say? Is she thinking at all about the fact that everyone else at the table is eating the dessert?

Thing is, I know that when she is all alone, she goes in her closet and stuffs her face because she confided that to me once. She said that she was depressed about something and found herself hiding in the closet eating some kind of chocolate cookie. So it's not even really about her trying to be good, it's about APPEARING good.

When she is laying on her death bed, and thinks about what she would like to do in her remaining minutes, I bet she thinks about the food she wishes she could eat one last time. I, however, won't be wishing I could have that last piece of pie a la mode, because I've had enough in my life time. And let's take it one step further. After she is resurrected, food won't have the same meaning to her. She won't need food, so I really doubt it will taste as good. That's the gospel according to Delirious. ;) So really, this life time is the time to really enjoy being human.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think we should eat ourselves in to an obese state. And I'm all for eating healthy and exercising. But truthfully, is that one piece of pie at Christmas going to kill you? If you have some cookies on Friday night while watching television, is that really going to give you a coronary? I don't believe so. If you eat McDonald's three times a week and all kinds of other high fat food, then we need to talk about eating healthy. But when the scriptures talk about there being a "moderation in all things", I believe that includes dessert. Totally abstaining isn't moderation. At least that's my motto for the coming holidays. :)

I think most people who eat normal just need more exercise - like me! I agree with you, which is why I go ahead and eat that cookie. But then I don't do enough exercise, so that is why I am fat. And I know it.

Delirious, "all things in moderation" was a saying we inherited from the pagan Stoic philosophers. The Bible says:

"Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might." - Ecclesiastes 9:10
