When I had the biopsy done on my neck the other day, the doctor suddenly said, "Oops, I caused it to bruise..dang!" I said, "It's okay, I'll just tell people it's a hicky". Well, now it's starting to turn a little purple, and doesn't look so much like a hicky. :S
I didn't mention in my last post that the doctor said that in the past, doctors routinely have taken out these goiters just like they routinely used to take out tonsils. He said they don't necessarily take out the goiters anymore unless the patient requests it. If the biopsy results came back showing evidence of cancer, then of course we would do surgery. But if not, I think we will just keep a watch on it for awhile. In general, my thyroid works fine, and my thyroid hormone levels are normal, I just have cysts. So unless I develop some other symptom such as pain when swallowing, we will probably leave this and just keep a watch on it. My thinking is that if I have surgery done, they will probably take the whole thing, and I would have to take thryoid medicine for the rest of my life. I would rather let it go as long as possible before having to do that. So for now, I'll just watch it unless the test results show a problem.
