The Sound of Music--Tuacahn Ampitheater

We stopped to visit my inlaws in the St. George, Utah area this weekend. She invited us to go with her to the Tuacahn theater to see "The Sound of Music". Maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, but I think my kids enjoyed it as much as we did. As you can see in the picture, it is an outdoor ampitheater with the mountains as a back drop. So in the play, when the family climbs the Alps to safety, they are actually climbing the red mountains near Snow Canyon.

Because it was held outside, there were many things they could easily add to the play that might have been more difficult indoors. For one, they were able to drive an authentic car (swastika on the side) on to the "set". At the end of the play they shot off fireworks.

I really enjoyed several parts of the play in particular. The first was the scenes with the Nuns singing in the Abbey. The voices and music were absolutely beautiful. I also very much enjoyed and the scene with the puppet show. They had real people play the part of the puppets, with the children standing on a bridge above. It was amazing to me that the children didn't get the puppet ropes tangled up. They had choreographed how to dart in and out between each other to keep the ropes from tangling. Even the 6 year old actress took part.

I know that activities like this aren't cheap, but I really hope I can find more opportunities to take my children to events like this. I did take my two oldest to see Romeo and Juliet at the Cedar City Shakespeare festival. I'm not sure they fully appreciated it, but I think it is good for them to be exposed to all kinds of new things. And besides...I love it. :)

Sorry the above comment doesn't make sense. My computer froze on your window and I thought I was commenting on someone else's. But I still learned something new about you and you're amazing too!

For your post I was going to say that my in-laws try to go to Tuacahn every year as well. Michelle and I happened to be in the right place at the right time and went with them once. It is amazing what they can do with the outdoor stage! Glad you enjoyed your trip.

That sounds like fun! I need to do more of that kind of thing.
